Did you grow up with all girls or all boys?  Or both?  It makes such a difference!  I was the youngest of three girls and my husband the third of four boys and I cannot tell you how many times I fell in the toilet in the middle of the night before I had him trained to put the stinkin' lid back down.

About once a month, I seriously wish I had one more girl about four years younger than my youngest boy.  Having had both, I do not believe anyone who says we train them to be feminine or masculine.  I think they are MORE boy and MORE girl, and we train them to try to meet in the middle to get along in the world.

Peyton is 112% girl.  She may be a CEO someday, or terrific athlete, or marine (can't picture that), but she is all girl, eyelashes and sweet cheeks and giggles.  She is completely comfortable with being pretty and feminine and happy to pose.  She needed very little direction and caught on quickly to whatever we tried.  My favorite moment was her showing me how she had learned to float on her back.  Thank heaven for little girls!

"So anyway..."

That's what I always say to one of my best friends from high school.  We may not talk to or see each other for a year or two as we live far away, but when we pick up the phone or finagle a meeting, we can just say, "So anyway..." and get right back into the rhythm our pal-dom has enjoyed since we worked the concession stand at Crystal Lake Beach for $2.15 an hour. This girl is so dang funny and witty my cheeks and my stomach muscles hurt when we talk for long.

Her daughter, whom I remember as a baby having tons of helicopter paraphernalia, as her father flew a Blackhawk in the army, messaged me about taking her boyfriend's senior pictures when they traveled down from Kansas.  Yeah, man!  So I got to spend the day with Laura and her boy, Tyler... another handsome football player, third in a row!  She is just as cool as her mom. :-)

She'd look good in a Burlap Sack!

Wednesday, March 2, 2011

I grew up hearing it.  "She'd look good in a burlap sack."  Sometimes I would picture it in my head, that girl in a burlap sack.  It was usually kind disclaimer to say, "Hmmm, that is an UGLY dress, but she's pretty and I like her so I'm going to add this little phrase to make it all OK."  It was kind of like saying, "Bless her heart" in the South.  You can say the ugliest things if you begin or end with "Blessherheart."  "She's as dumb as a stump, blessherheart."

Well, in my acutely unbiased and even view of the world, I decided that if anyone would look good in a burlap sack, it would be my daughter and her friends.  Plus, they owe me for many years of pizza and brownies.  So I told them to gussy up (this talk of burlap sacks is bringing out my farmer past) and made them put on burlap sacks.  It was an entirely scientific experiment that I believe proved the "If/Then" statement, If you put a pretty young girls in a burlap sack with make-up and hair and a fun attitude... Then they will still look good.

PS.  They look pretty cute in white shirts too.
