Dreading Christmas? Borrow a Friend's Tradition
This past Christmas was hard for my family. There is always much to
be grateful for, and it is, after all, a time to celebrate Christ. But my mother-in-law had advanced ALS. We couldn’t help but remember all the Christmases when she was
healthy and cooking entirely too much food. We tried to have our big tradition of decorating the
Christmas tree, but truly, our hearts weren’t in it. One night my kids came running in to say that the neighbors had
the life-sized antique child's train they have displayed in their front yard, running to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis. They have been doing this or something like it for 16
years. We went there instead. I decorated the tree by myself. Sometimes a friend’s tradition was part
of your tradition all along, and helps you through the ones you can’t get
through on your own.
